Arcade: Universal 1982.
Home Version: Coleco 1983.
Arcade Description: Mr. Do is a busy little clown. The player controls his movements as he attempts to grab all the cherries on screen. Hoping to stop him are a gang of Badguys that originate from a "monster generator" in the middle of the screen. Levels are completed when all the cherries are picked, or all monsters are destroyed. Mr. Do is armed with a powerball that can destroy the monsters when thrown. The ball eventually returns to him after a few seconds. He can also push or drop apples scattered about the maze onto his enemies. When all monsters are loose (and occasionally at random) and Mr. Do runs over the generator, an Alphamonster (sporting a huge letter on his chest) and his horde of Chompers appear to "do in" Mr. Do. Chompers can be destroyed with the powerball, but they will eat apples. If the Alphamonster is destroyed, it's letter (either an E, X, T, R, or A) is placed in the score box. If the player manages to spell "EXTRA" the level is over and the player is rewarded with a bonus Mr. Do. On occasion, a diamond will appear which will end the level when picked up.
Pros: All enemies are present.
Cons: The sequence of events that produce Alphamonsters and Chompers are not present. Fewer cherries per screen. The diamond failed to make it into the home version. No monster generator either! The game is also rather slow.
The Scorecard - How Does It Match Up?
(all categories are out of a possible 10 with 1 being poor and 10 being excellent)
Graphics/Animation: 5. Although all characters are recognizable, they are all single color. There is an awful lot of flickering here too.
Sound Effects and Music: 4. The good news is, each round begins (and each game ends) with Mr. Do's little jingles from the arcade. After that, it's pretty darn quiet. Sounds are minimal.
Levels: 4. On the plus side, the "EXTRA" option is here and it earns a bonus man and it ends the current level. However... The arcade had progressivley tougher levels and each had a different shape. The Coleco home version barely changes. There aren't as many cherries in the maze. Chompers and Alphamonsters appear at random and there are only two Badguys in the maze at any given time. The Chompers don't even eat apples!
Control: 7 The game controls are just like the arcade but are a bit sluggish.
Scoring: 10. The scoring is essentially identical to the arcade. Same points for destroying enemies, getting all cherries, and even the progressive fruit picking score.
The Wrap Up: 30 out of 50.
